Aaron Ekblad - No. 5 | Ekblad

AARON EKBLAD IS HARD WORKING

On June 27th, rx this 18 year old professional hockey player from Belle River Ontario will step onto the stage of the NHL Draft, price expected to be a 1st round pick.

HOW DID HE GET HERE?

Aaron is the youngest son of Lisa and Dave Ekblad, and along with his older brother Darien the starting goaltender for the Essex 73’s, they dreamed of one day making it to the NHL.
Aaron’s passion for hockey started very young. He was a strong determined kid, on skates at age 3 and able to start playing hockey at age 4. He simply loved the game and practiced with dedication and focus.
His consistent determination and relentless approach to practice and training paid off as he excelled at the sport but never rested on his early success. He continued to work hard. To play with focus. To be a team player and lead by example which lead him to becoming the first defenseman to be granted exceptional player status by Hockey Canada.
In 2011 Aaron was selected first overall by the Barrie Colts in the 2011 OHL Priority Draft, and is now the team’s captain. Hard work helped him achieve the Emm’s Family Award as OHL Rookie of the year in 2011-12.
In 2012 Aaron entered Hockey Canada’s ‘Program of Excellence’ (a year young) by representing Team Ontario at the World U-17 tournament held in Windsor, ON. He was an Assistant Captain earning a bronze medal. He again played in the U-17 in 2013, this time as Captain for Team Ontario. That same year he was Captain of Team Canada at the Ivan Helinka Tournament capturing an impressive gold medal.
Aaron represented Canada at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championships and was captain of Team Orr at the 2014 BMO CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Calgary.
Today, Aaron stands tall at 6’4 and 216 lbs. He’s an avid athlete, a powerful player and presents himself with a maturity beyond his years. He’s mobile, hard-hitting, and has an incredible passion for the game. Aaron shows strong leadership both on and off the ice, while always remaining composed and determined.
Aaron most recently completed his third season with the Colts in 2013-14, where he was awarded the Max Kaminsky Trophy as the OHL most outstanding Defenceman of the year.

Next up — the NHL

Aaron wants all kids to know that there is no secret and no magic to getting to where he is today. It’s just hard work and dedication. And kids, you have it. You can do it. You can work hard if you want it. You are all Ekblad.
